What is the Kohima Epitaph and what has it got to do with Britain’s forgotten battle that changed the Second World War?
Well, those of you living in the UK and who attend Remembrance Sunday services will probably know the words even if you don’t know the story behind them:
“When you go home, tell them of us and say,
For your tomorrow, We gave our today.”
The memorial which bears those powerful words, stands in a cemetery containing the graves over over 1,400 British servicemen and memorials to over 900 Indian troops who died alongside them.
They died in one of the bloodiest, toughest, grimmest battles of the Second World War.
A battle sometimes called the “Stalingrad of the East.”
Outnumbered 6:1 and half of whom were from non-combat units, the multi-national British garrison stood their ground in bloody hand-to-hand fighting, refusing to retreat or surrender for two weeks until relieved. And even then the battle continued for another vicious month.
That stand stopped the Japanese invasion of India in its tracks and turned the tide of the war in South East Asia.
Both for its ferocity and its turning point in the war, it has been called: “Britain’s greatest battle.”
The Japanese lost 53,000 men from their army of 85,000.
The British (14th Army) lost 4,000 men killed and wounded.
This forgotten victory was made possible by General William (Bill) Slim commanding the 14th Army.
Rather like the battle and the 14th Army, General Slim has not received the recognition that he is due.
And yet, it is almost completely forgotten.
Rather like the army that fought against the Japanese in Burma.
So, as we near Remembrance Sunday, I think it is time to reveal the story of the Battle of Kohima in 1944.

My name is Chris Green and I love to share stories from British history. Not just because they are interesting but because, good or bad, they have shaped the world we live in today.
History should not be stuffy or a long list of dates or kings & queens.
So rather than lectures or Youtube animations, I tell stories that bring the past to life.
My aim is to be chat as if I were having a coffee or meal with you. Jean in Maryland, USA recently wrote: "Chris, is the history teacher I wish I had at school!"
Just for the record, I do have a history degree in Medieval & Modern history from the University of Birmingham.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) operates the Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules. It is a tactical airlifter aircraft used for various purposes, including:
* Special Operations: The C-130J is equipped for precision low-level flying, airdrops, and landings in blackout conditions, making it suitable for special operations.
* Humanitarian Aid: The aircraft can transport civilians and supplies, especially in harsh conditions or remote areas.
* Strategic Airlift: It can carry significant cargo and troops over considerable distances.
* Operating from Austere Airfields: The C-130J is capable of taking off and landing from short, unpaved runways, even at high elevations and in hot climates.
The IAF acquired its first C-130J aircraft in 2011 and currently operates a fleet of these aircraft. They have proven to be vital assets for the IAF, demonstrating their capabilities in various operations, including landing at the world's highest airfield in Daulat Beg Oldie, Ladakh, and conducting night landings at the Kargil airstrip.

20-04-2025: In a press briefing held today, Neelam Pope, one of the founding organizers of the Lower Subansiri and Keyi Panyor Idol, raised serious concerns over the unauthorized launch of a new event titled Lower Subansiri Idol. Pope stated that this new event is being organized without informing or seeking consent from the original organizing team, despite the fact that Season 2 of the original Idol concluded less than a year ago and was built as a joint cultural initiative between Lower Subansiri and Keyi Panyor.
Pope highlighted that the sudden use of a similar event name and concept not only disrespects the collaborative spirit of the original platform but also causes confusion among participants and the public. He stated, “We were shocked to learn about this through social media announcements. There was no communication, no consent, and no respect shown toward the team that built this from scratch.”
To address the issue formally, Pope informed that he has already contacted the Deputy Commissioner (DC) and has filed an FIR at the Ziro Police Station against the new organizers for misrepresentation and unauthorized use of the event name and concept.

Interview with Leegang Ania Shares Insights from AWAZ's Exposure Tour to Sikkim
Leegang Ania, former General Secretary of the Apatani Women Association Ziro (AWAZ), recently embarked on a seven-day exposure tour to Sikkim, exploring the state's thriving tourism industry, exceptional hospitality, and women empowerment initiatives. In an exclusive interview, Anya shared her experiences and key takeaways from the tour.
Sikkim's Tourism Model: A Lesson for Arunachal Pradesh
Ania praised Sikkim's well-structured rural tourism model, highlighting the crucial role of homestays, organic farming, and sustainable practices in the state's economy. She noted that such models could be replicated in Ziro to enhance its status as a tourist destination.
Women-Centric Schemes and Policies in Sikkim
During the tour, the AWAZ team interacted with Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang Golay, who briefed them on various women-centric schemes and policies implemented by the state government. These initiatives include:
- Sikkim Aama Sashaktikaran Yojana (SASY): Providing financial assistance of ₹20,000 to non-working, unwed, widowed, divorced, or separated mothers.
- "Mero Rukh Mero Santati" Initiative: Encouraging environmental conservation by planting 108 trees for every newborn child.
- NAMASTE Yojna, Bauhinia Scheme, and Vatsalya Scheme: Focusing on financial security, education, and employment opportunities for women.
Ania emphasized that these initiatives demonstrate Sikkim's progressive approach to women empowerment, serving as an inspiration for similar policies in Arunachal Pradesh.
Innovative Business Ideas for Arunachal Pradesh
Ania suggested innovative business ideas that could generate income for local communities in Arunachal Pradesh. One such idea was bee farming, as she observed that pure honey is highly valued and expensive in Sikkim. Encouraging beekeeping as an economic activity, she noted that Arunachal Pradesh's rich biodiversity and favorable climate provide an ideal environment for honey production.
Applying Knowledge Gained from Sikkim
The exposure tour provided AWAZ with a comprehensive understanding of sustainable tourism, economic opportunities, and policy-driven empowerment. Anya expressed optimism that the knowledge gained from Sikkim could be effectively applied in Ziro, contributing to community development, women's empowerment, and economic growth.
